Phil Collins was to produce again, but as Genesis formed part of his other commitments, producer Steve Lillywhite took over his role. Shine has never been officially released in the United States, but was issued in Canada by WEA. This is the last song written by the ABBA composers to be recorded by either of ABBA's female vocalists to date. The track "Slowly" was written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA.

The Shine album is also unique as it saw the debut of Lyngstad as a songwriter in both "Don't Do It" and "That's Tough", the latter also features her son Hans Fredriksson as co-writer. Shine features songwriting contributions from musicians such as the late Kirsty MacColl, Simon Climie - of Climie Fisher fame, and Pete Glenister - Alison Moyet's co-writer and producer. In " Frida - The DVD", when speaking about Shine and its failure to recreate the success of its predecessor, Lyngstad herself says "that maybe this album became a bit too modern for its time". Lillywhite managed to give Lyngstad an even more modern and complex soundscape than Phil Collins had done on her previous album. Shine reached the Top 10 on the album charts in Sweden, Norway and Belgium, and the Top 20 in the Netherlands.Īt the time of recording both Something's Going On and Shine, Lyngstad wanted to distance herself from the "typical ABBA pop-sound" and try new directions. In some countries "Twist In The Dark" and "Heart Of The Country" were released as singles. The lead single from the album was the title track, "Shine". The producer was Steve Lillywhite, and at only 29 years of age was already known for his work with Peter Gabriel, the Rolling Stones and U2 amongst others. Recording began on February 1, 1984, at the Studios de la Grande Armée, Paris, France. The promotional videos and clips from this album are included in the 3 1⁄ 2 hour documentary " Frida - The DVD". It was first released in September 1984 and has since been re-released several times, mainly in the digitally remastered form in 2005 with bonus tracks. His efforts here are indeed commendable, particularly considering the precedent he's following, but ultimately this is a rather forgettable album, on a par with other here-today, gone-tomorrow post- Biggie Bad Boy releases like Black Rob's Life Story (1999) and G. From the opening monologue ("Dear America, I'm only what you made me/Young, black, and f*cking crazy/Maybe if all you niggas were building schools instead of prisons, I'd stop living the way I'm living/Probably not/I'm so used to serving rocks and burning blocks"), there's little denying that Shyne is trying to be what his audience wants him to be: the hardest rapper yet, harder than 2Pac, Biggie, and DMX.
The album unfortunately comes across as far too contrived, seeming staged and overly theatrical. The long-awaited debut by Notorious B.I.G.'s successor on Puff Daddy's Bad Boy label, Shyne, follows through on its promise to present a thuggish, hardcore equivalent to the seemingly irreplaceable, deceased gangsta superstar.
